BA's fleet replacement process takes off

British Airways (BA), having 284 aircraft, has launched fleet replacement process, the accent being on the acquisition of long-haul aircraft. The types of aircraft being considered include Airbus A330, A350,A380 and Boeing 787, B777 and B747-8.

The airline has initiated the first step, request for proposal (RFP), in a lengthy process before the decision is made about the fleet growth and replacement over the next decade. Accordingly, two of the world's largest aircraft manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing and top engine manufacturers such as Engine Alliance, General Electric and Rolls-Royce and other key component suppliers have been invited to bid. BA in past few years, according to the airline sources, increased its capacity by better and more efficient utilisation of aircraft.

It now feels that time has come to acquire additional long-haul aircraft in view of the plans to grow in long-haul business.
