Meet on steels for automotives on Nov 13

Kolkata , Nov. 6

The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), in association with Tata Steel, will host an international conference on "Steels for Automotives" in Jamshedpur on November 13.

The conference is part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and 60th Annual Technical Meeting of IIM. The 44th National Metallurgists' Day will also be celebrated on November 14. The Union Minister of State for Steel, Mr Akhilesh Das, will be the chief guest.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr B. Muthuraman, President of IIM and Managing Director of Tata Steel, said the theme of the international conference was chosen in view of the growth in the automobile sector in the country and the role of quality steel in complementing that growth. Globally, about 80 million tonnes of steel are consumed by the automotive sector every year, he said.

Mr Muthuraman said a total of 12 papers would be presented at the conference. Of this, three would be presented by those representing Indian companies while the rest would be by those representing overseas companies. The Indian companies that would present papers are Tata Steel, SAIL and Maruti Udyog Ltd. The overseas companies include Arcelor-Mittal, Nippon Steel and Kobe Steel of Japan, SMS Demag of Germany and Pirelli Tyre S.p.A of Italy, among others.

Students from premier institutes will present papers on metallurgy. A "Special students session" will aim at facilitating greater industry-academia interface in the days ahead, Mr Muthuraman said.
