Cinema States - Andhra Pradesh Telugu film sector imposes curbs on dubbing movies K.V. Kurmanath
Hyderabad , Nov. 7 The Telugu film industry is in for a fresh row with Producers' Council deciding to impose curbs on dubbing movies, taking a cue from neighbouring Karnataka. The council has also called for putting a full stop on dubbing films. It, however, has given a reprieve for those who have already bought rights for dubbing at a very huge consideration. Such producers are supposed to produce relevant papers within a week. Those films will be released at a later date. "We will not consider any plea later on," the council warned its members. The argument in favour of the decision is that dubbing movies would destroy the original movie-making in Telugu. At the recently held general body meeting, the council, a powerful arm in the AP Film Chamber of Commerce, has discussed the `problem' in detail. Some members reportedly argued that the number of dubbing films, at any given point of time, was equal to `straight films'. "This has become a scourge. It is becoming increasingly difficult to fight with these films. These films (dubbing) will pull the rug from under our feet," a producer reportedly argued in the meeting. Their fear, in fact, is not without a reason. Openings for films of Rajnikanth, Vikram, Surya, Vijaykanth and Kamal Hasan are no less than that of local stars. The decision, however, is likely to split the industry vertically considering the fact that the number of producers who rely on dubbing movies is not small. A producer, on condition of anonymity, strongly opposed the decision. "How can they do that? The cost of production has gone up so much that we cannot make a movie in Telugu. It has become the forte only of the big producers. We are able to release a dubbing movie with much lesser budget. What is their problem," he asked. "They can buy rights for remakes by spending crores. Will they stop it," he asked.
