The Union Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, toured some of the flood-hit areas in Krishna district on Tuesday andassured that the Centre would give "substantial help" to Andhra Pradesh, which was hit by cyclone and floods recently. The Minister, however, did not quantify the assistance. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy, accompanied him on his tour of affected areas.
Addressing press persons, Mr Patil said that a Central team would visit the affected areas on Thursday and an announcement would be made thereafter. .
He said he would apprise the Prime Minister and the Union Finance Minister of the extensive crop damage and damage to property, caused by cyclone Ogni, in the coastal districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, West Godavari and East Godavari last week.
ADVICE TO STATE
He advised the State Government to set up a State-level Disaster Management Authority with the Chief Minister as the Chairman.
He also agreed with the proposals of the State Government to modernise the Godavari and Krishna deltas. He said it was the right move, as the coastal districts were prone to cyclones and frequent flooding.
The Home Minister landed at Machilipatnam, the district headquarters town of Krishna, in a helicopter and spent an hour touring some of the villages in the vicinity. Later, he conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas in Krishna and Guntur districts.
