`Develop fisheries harbours'

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Nov. 7

The Coastal Karnataka Fishermen's Action Committee has urged the Government to take up overall development of fisheries harbours in the State.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr Pramod Madhwaraj, President of the committee, said that the Government is yet to give attention to various issues related to fishermen.

The Government should take up overall development of fisheries harbours along coastal Karnataka. Dredging has not taken place in fisheries harbours at Old Mangalore, Malpe, Gangolli, Honnavar and Tadadi.

He urged the ministers hailing from coastal Karnataka to convene a meeting of fishermen to discuss their problems.

The State Government, which has announced Matsyashraya housing scheme for fishermen, is yet to take up work on the construction of the houses, he said. The Government should release loans to fishermen at four per cent interest rate immediately.

Mr Madhwaraj urged the Government to improve the fish-marketing infrastructure in the State.

A mega convention of fishermen and farmers will be held in Mangalore on November 21 and these issues will be figured in that convention.

Though the departments of port and fisheries are interrelated, these portfolios have been distributed between two different ministers. Both the ministers should coordinate for the welfare of fishermen in the state, he added.
