Plastics States - West Bengal Work on Poly Park gets under way Our Bureau
Inplas would be the first such event in eastern India where live demonstration of plastics processing machines will be made on such a large scale
Kolkata , Nov. 9 Land of 65 acres for the Poly Park at Sankrail in Howrah, West Bengal, the first such in the country, has already been allotted by the West Bengal Government, and work on the necessary infrastructure at the site is now in progress. The park will come up in 50 acres. Briefing presspersons here today on `Indplas' 06, the four-day international plastics exhibition in the city beginning November 24, Mr K.M. Tibrewala, President, Indian Plastics Federation (IPF), said some 38 units have shown interest and some are expected to start production at the Howrah Poly Park by end-2007. He said 1.02 acres have been given to the IPF by the State Government free of cost for setting up a Centre of Excellence within the Poly Park, conceived as a long term project, in which the federation is planning to set up a comprehensive training centre to address both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of plastics processing, finished products etc. "We feel that Indplas' 06 will serve the purpose of attracting substantial investments in plastics processing industry in eastern India." He informed that surplus funds from Indplas' 06 will be utilised for setting up the proposed Centre of Excellence. Pointing out that no pucca blueprint has been prepared yet, he said the initial cost for setting up the park will not be less than Rs 3 crore. He expected the Poly Park to attract investments of around Rs 200 crore. Various suggestions from the plastics industry have also been sought to make the park project a success, he added. On the employment potential, he said some 20,000 direct jobs could be generated. On Indplas' 06, organised jointly by IPA and Plastindia Foundation in association with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (WBIDC), Mr Amar Seth, Chairman, Exhibition Organising Committee, said the exhibition, spread over an area of 30,000 sq m, will showcase latest developments in plastics processing machines, raw materials, master batches, moulds & dies, and ancillary equipment.

He said the event would be the first such in eastern India where live demonstration of plastics processing machines will be made on such a large scale. Pointing out that some 250 visitors are expected to participate including overseas visitors from countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan, Nepal, Bhutan and China, Mr Seth said the National Council of Plasticulture Applications in Horticulture, under the Agriculture Ministry of Government of India, will showcase application of plastics in agriculture and horticulture. Among the leading exhibitors at Indplas' 06 will be raw material companies such as Haldia Petrochemicals, Reliance Industries, Gujarat State Fertilisers & Chemicals, GAIL India Ltd and South Asia Petrochem, and machinery manufacturers such as Windsor Machines Ltd, Larsen & Toubro, Ferromatik Milacron Ltd, JP Industries and Electronica Machine Tools Ltd.
