The Hindu Business Line : `Honing up employability skills must'

At the inauguration, the Ma Foi Managing Director, Mr K. Pandia Rajan, spoke on employability of students. Quoting a management guru, he said that to be employed was to be at risk; to be employable was to be stable.

In today's fast-changing world, educational qualification did not carry as much importance as it used to. It is more on employability, which includes attitude, skill and habit. Recalling a survey his organisation did a few years ago on Anna University's students, Mr Pandia Rajan said 48 per cent of students from Tier Two colleges did not get a job. This, he said, was to do with their employability skills.

To become employable, he urged the students to do a self-analysis on their personality. "Try to understand yourself better: your strengths, weaknesses and interests," he said.

This would help the students land a job easily, especially when companies are finding it difficult to get the right people and are knocking on the doors of all institutions looking for employable candidates. Mr Pandia Rajan also spoke about entrepreneurship. "Indians have entrepreneurship ingrained in their blood. It is only that we have been led to believe otherwise,'' he said.

He then cited the example of Suhas, who at the age of 15, turned entrepreneur with his gaming portal, to drive home the point. He also quoted about Dr G. Venkataswamy of Aravind Eye Care System, Madurai, who set up the hospital when he was 65.

The Principal, Mr P.S.S. Srinivasan, who welcomed the gathering, said how his growing up with The Hindu had helped him have a wider perspective of the world.

The college Chairman, Mr K.S. Rangasamy, advised the students to make best use of the opportunity the BL Club provided. The Director of the School of Management, Mr K. Prabhakar, also participated.
