Call for greater Indo-Italian biz ties

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 15

Eyeing an Indo-Italian bilateral trade of $10 billion in the next three years, industry chamber FICCI is setting up a "sustainable" platform for engagement in the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector of the two countries. In this direction, the chamber recently led a delegation to the European country with representatives from the machine tool, auto components, gems and jewellery, leather and textiles SME firms. "There is great connect in this sector between the two countries as Indian firms want technical input from the Italians while they are eager to seek competitive manufacturing facilities from Indians enterprises," said FICCI President Mr Saroj K. Poddar. Other inputs that the Indian SMEs can seek from the Italians are design capability and new equipment while their Italian counterparts can seek better sourcing and the large market in India, he added. The dialogue initiated by the chamber along with the Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, in Italy would be followed up during the Italian Trade Minister's visit to India in January and later during the Italian Prime Minister's visit in February.
