Doordarshan, the television broadcast arm of Prasar Bharati, has produced a series of Indian classics, some of which have never been filmed before. This includes Tamil literary works such as `Chandrikayin Kadhai' by Bharathiar and `Karavai' by Vaiyavan.
The public broadcaster has invested Rs 30 crore to produce 800 episodes of the Classics Series said Mr G. Srinivasan, Deputy General Manager - Marketing, South Zone, Prasar Bharati. This includes 126 in-house productions and 674 episodes commissioned to external production houses. He said that due to "television content shortage", Prasar Bharati had undertaken to produce these serials written by eminent authors in 15 Indian languages. Besides these episodes, an 18-part documentary film by Dr S. Krishnaswamy, of production house Krishnaswamy Associates, has also been commissioned. Called `Indian Imprints,' the documentary would explore the impact of ancient Indian culture on South East Asian countries.
The Classic Series has been broadcast in the non-prime time slot and failed to generate adequate advertisements, said Mr Srinivasan. To create awareness about the series, Prasar Bharati will be showing few of these works in theatres across the country.
