Engg export promotion body plans expo in Cairo

Our Bureau

8 firms from eastern region to participate

Export thrust
"Right now, our exports constitute less than one per cent of Egypt's global imports of engineering goods and if we can achieve even one per cent share, our exports will nearly double the current level; we are trying to achieve it within three years."

Kolkata , Nov 15

The Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) proposes to conduct a mega exhibition called INDEE in Cairo from November 23-26 to showcase India as a producer and exporter of a wide variety of engineering goods and services.

Eight engineering firms from the eastern region out of a total of 115 from all over the country will participate in the event.

The firms from the eastern region are mostly in the areas of forgings and manufacture of auto components.

The western regions firms will dominate the exhibition with a wide variety of products; the participation of firms from the North and the South will be in equal proportion.

Mr Rakesh Shah, Chairman of EEPC, told newspersons that INDEE would be part of MEGATECH 2006, a huge industrial exposition of West Asia and North Africa.

"INDEE will occupy about 1,000 sq m, roughly 20 per cent of the total space of MEGATECH."

EEPC had held a similar fair at Cairo in the year 2000.

Exuding optimism over the prospects of export of India's engineering goods to Egypt, he said that signs were already visible.

In 2005-06, the exports amounted to $145.58 million, growing 52 per cent over the previous year.

"Right now, our exports constitute less than one per cent of Egypt's global imports of engineering goods and if we can achieve even one per cent share, our exports will nearly double the current level; we are trying to achieve it within three years."

Exports of engineering goods from India to Egypt grew at a compounded annual growth rate of around eight per cent between 1994-95 and 1999-2000 and at more than 29 per cent between 2000-01 and 2005-06.

Forbes Gokak, Kirloskar Oil Engines and Sharp Tools, among others, will be present at the event.

The items to be displayed include hand tools, power tools, mould and dies, compressors and pumps and various types of equipment, besides automotive components, generators, castings and forgings, fasteners and electrical items.

"However, the thrust items will be automobiles and parts, IC engines and parts and motorcycles and bicycles."
