Security of oil installations reviewed
Our Bureau
New Delhi, Nov. 16
Concerned over the security of oil installations, the National Security Advisor, Mr M. K. Narayanan, held a meeting with chiefs of oil companies here on Wednesday. Sources told Business Line that security provisions and requirements for offshore installations and pipelines were discussed at the meeting.
ONGC's offshore security requirements and methods adopted by the company were also discussed. As per reports, intelligence agencies have indicated that besides religious and public places, oil installations could also be targets for the terrorists. Oil installations and pipelines across the country were seen as very sensitive to terror attacks.
Energy security holds importance in the context of heavy investments involved in the sector. India is 28 per cent self sufficient as of now, and import dependency for crude oil is expected to go up steadily. Keeping this in mind, the country is aggressively looking for acreage abroad as well as gearing up exploration activities within the country.
