Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Web Extras - Outlook Easterlies' impact felt on coastal TN Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 16 Easterly waves in the South have flourished in tandem with the varying moods of the moisture-rich global band of `low' in the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone. The waves carry most of their weather in front, and satellite imageries reveal that they have started impacting coastal Tamil Nadu, said Mr J. V. Singh of the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting. VORTEX-LIKE The clouding and moisture built over the southwest Bay of Bengal reminded one of a monsoon vortex, which could cause cloudburst-like conditions within its immediate footprint. But it would need a natural barrier, not available on the coast, to provide the sudden `uplift' to be able to let down the torrents. Most of the cloudiness will thus get emptied with the wave making a landfall, and the residual moisture will get strewn to the west and southwest. The rainy session has been predicted to go on for another 48 hours. According to Mr Singh, the rains will start relenting from November 20, and the easterly wave activity will get subdued thereafter. This will help clear up the skies over the Bay of Bengal for once, and allow the seawaters to warm under the sun. But this will only prepare the ground for a prospective weather system, since any subsequent easterly wave passing the warming waters could get sufficiently activated. This might result in the formation of a `low'/depression, which the Bay has not given birth to thus far during the season.
The outlook for rainfall in the catchment area of the Mullaperiyar dam on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border has largely been maintained. The maximum permissible reservoir level of the 111-year-old dam at 136 ft has been breached over and again.
