Rupee gains 40 paise

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Nov. 16

The rupee strengthened by almost 40 paise on good dollar supplies in the market. Foreign banks were aggressively selling dollars. The market suspects that banks received dollars from some countries in South-East Asia, said a dealer with a private bank.

The home currency opened at 45.32, and closed at Rs 44.92/93, against the previous close of 45.34/35. "The trading was very volatile today and it is difficult to predict the movement of the rupee," said the dealer.

In forwards, the six-month premium closed at 1.98 per cent (1.88 per cent) and the one-year closed at 1.82 per cent (1.73 per cent). The dollar had weakened initially by 10-15 basis points against the global currencies such as yen, euro and pound sterling. However later in the day, it regained its strength.
