TN foodgrains merchants' plea

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Nov. 17

The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has appealed to the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr R. Velu, to effect a reversal of rates of freight charges for pulses and cereals.

Submitting a memorandum to the Minister during his recent visit to the city, the association pointed out that during the Budget session the rates were hiked from 90 per cent to 120 per cent, resulting in an escalation in prices of food items by 33 per cent. On representation, the hike was restricted to 110 per cent leading to a marginal reduction in the prices.

However, no reduction was effected with reference to cereals. Tamil Nadu, for its consumption, imports these items from other States and countries. As a result, the railways has been incurring a loss in revenue, as these items are transited by road through lorries.
