Regulatory Bodies & Rulings TRAI keen on better use of bandwidth Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 17 In a bid to affect a drop in domestic leased line tariffs and increase competition levels in the segment, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper to discuss issues such as making it mandatory for the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd to share its last mile infrastructure with other operators. As per TRAI data, 40 per cent of the domestic bandwidth available in the country is lying unused. The domestic leased circuit is the key telecommunication resource used by various operators, corporates and individuals for data, voice, video and Internet connectivity. Almost all the telecom service providers from mobile operators to Internet service providers use leased lines. Effective competition in this segment can make a positive contribution to the overall competitiveness of the economy by driving costs down for businesses and offering consumers a wider range of products and services at more competitive prices. "TRAI has observed that effective competition in the domestic leased circuits segment in all areas is still lacking and there appears to be some problems for the efficient utilisation of the existing DLC infrastructure and its benefits for the customers. Therefore, the Authority feels there is an urgent need for deliberation on various measures to enhance effective competition in this segment. With the above objective to promote further competition in DLC market in India, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has issued a consultation paper to solicit comments of various stakeholder," TRAI said in a press release.
