Ombudsperson likely for pvt sector quota

Deepak Goel

New Delhi , Nov. 18

The tangle between the Government and the private sector over reservation of jobs mayfinally be sorted out through the institution of an ombudsperson.

Sources in the private sector told Business Line that to oversee and implement affirmative action in private jobs, a private ombudsperson may be appointed instead of compulsorily providing reservation for backward classes through legislation.

The proposal to set up an ombudsperson was made by industry chambers at a recent meeting with the Government and is most likely to go through since industry is strongly opposed to any legislation to make job reservations mandatory.

"The ombudsperson will review the efforts of private companies. These efforts will be reviewed once in six months. The Prime Minister too will look at the progress," said a source close to the development.

At the meeting early this week, the industry opposed a legislation in this regard arguing that when industry was more than willing to voluntarily adopt affirmative action, legislation was not needed.

The agenda for the meeting included debate on setting numerical targets for reservation in private companies and if a possible threshold in terms of number of people employed could be introduced for implementing affirmative action.
