Toshiba Corporation on Wednesday said that it had acquired the third position in the Indian notebooks market over the last two quarters. Over the last quarter, the company had a 9.5 per cent market share in the country and for March 2007, it is targeting 15 per cent share.

The company operates in India through its partnership with HCL Infosystems. During the April-June quarter, Toshiba sold about 2.19 lakh units as per the IDC report and the company is targeting to sell about 60,000 units in half-year period, which is October 2006-March 2007.

Market Share

Commenting on the company's expansion plans in the country, Mr Ivan Kam, Manager-Distributor Business South Asia, Computer Systems Division, Toshiba Singapore Pte Ltd, said: "Sixty per cent of our business comes from B2B (Business-to-Business) and remaining 40 per cent comes from B2C (Business-to-Consumer). With B2C growing, we plan to double our dealer base by March 2007, which currently stands at 300. We are targeting to increase our market share from the current 9.5 per cent to 15 per cent. We would like to reach the second position in the country."

Declining to divulge investment figures, Mr Kam said that they had been considering a manufacturing unit in the country over the last three years. However, he added that it was early to comment on any specific region that they had been exploring.

Mr Kam was in the country to launch its eco-friendly notebook PCs. The company has also introduced a digital lifestyle accessory category, `Pala-Chan,' MP3 player with about 15 hours of continuous playback time and range of Intel Core2Duo powered range notebooks.
