Berlin Airport invites Indian airlines

Ashwini Phadnis

Offers to pay only 20 pc of airport costs in first year

New Delhi , Nov. 27

Airlines from India have been offered a new gateway in Germany - Berlin — for launching flights into Europe and the US.

Berlin Airport is offering a package, whereby, airlines from India pay only 20 per cent of the airport costs during the first year of operation, which would progressively increase to full cost recovery during the fourth year of operations.

"We are keen to attract long-haul flights to Berlin. The launch of flights by Indian carriers should help them capture not only the German market but also offer easy connections to different parts of Europe. Initially, the airlines will only have to pay for security and infrastructure charges," the Team Leader, Aviation Marketing, Berlin Airport, Mr Simon R. Miller, told Business Line.

The Berlin Airport proposal could prove beneficial to a host of airlines, including Air India, Jet Airways, Indian and Air Sahara. At present, Air India operates flights to Frankfurt, while the German airline Lufthansa operates flights to Munich and Frankfurt.

Similarly, Kingfisher Airlines that is currently not allowed to operate international flights will soon be inducting wide-body Airbus aircraft that can be used to operate flights to Europe. Jet Airways has, however, shown an interest in operating its flights to the US through Dusseldorf.

"We have spoken to Indian, Air India, Kingfisher, Jet Airways and Air Sahara about operating through Berlin. While no one has made a commitment yet the response from the airlines was very positive during our discussions," Mr Miller said.
