Ahmedabad , Nov. 28

The Ahmedabad-based National Institute of Design (NID), which grooms designers for different industries, will organise the India Design Week from November 30 culminating into the 27th Convocation of the premier institution on December 7, 2006.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CCI) and NID are collaborating for the sixth consecutive year to bring forth the collective impact of design with India on to the global agenda. Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, has been invited to inaugurate the Sixth CII-NID Design Summit to be held in New Delhi on December 4-5 while advertising guru, Alyque Padamsee, will be the Chief Guest and main speaker at the Ahmedabad Convocation.

Giving this information, the NID Director, Dr Darlie O. Koshy, told at a press conference here on Tuesday that the events will commence at Ahmedabad with "Broadbanding Design II", a pre-convocation students' conference, on November 30, move on to Delhi and conclude at Ahmedabad with an industry interface. The number of companies participating is expected to go up from 43 last year to 60 to 65 this year. The events will have many international participants and the outcome is envisaged to have far-reaching impact on the design education and practice in India.

A new feature this year is the "Jewellery Design Display" and "Design Bazaar" to be organised as part of the event.

Through a National Design Business Incubator (NDBI), about 40 new ideas and concepts will be offered to prospective entrepreneurs.

At a Design Fair, innovators, designers and industry would all be brought on a single platform with an aim to project and market design-led innovations to the industry, Dr Koshy added.
