Performance Industry & Economy - Coal Coal India chief praises SECL performance Our Bureau
Kolkata , Nov. 28 After assuming the charge of Chairman of Coal India Ltd (CIL) in October 2006, Mr Partha S. Bhattacharyya, on his first visit to any subsidiary of CIL, recently visited South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL). He praised the overall performance of SECL in the field of production, productivity and profitability, and lauded the efforts of SECL family and its Chairman & Managing Director, Mr Birendra Kumar Sinha, for maintaining its flagship status in the country. While addressing the review meeting with functional directors, area CGMs and head of departments, Mr Bhattacharyya is stated to have suggested the SECL management to increase underground production to meet the higher demand in the future. In fact, SECL would have various challenges ahead, he cautioned. He indicated that coal demand would increase substantially in conformity with the increased requirement of energy due to higher economic growth. He stressed for enhancing UG production, maintaining the best safety standards. Mr Bhattacharyya indicated that by 2011-2012 the annual demand would increase to 731 million tonnes (mt). Of the total demand, CIL's annual contribution should be at least 500 mt. This suggests that in the next five years the combined production of CIL would have to proportionately increase at least by 137 mt from the present annual production of about 363 mt.
