Coal Coal imports may go up to 50 mt Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 28 India will need to import at least 50 million tonnes of coal per annum by the end of the 11th Plan period compared with 10 million tonnes at present, Planning Commission member (Energy), Mr Kirit Parikh said here on Tuesday. He said the country has explored only 50 per cent of its potential coal reserves, which will not be enough to cater to the growing demand by the various infrastructure sectors, including power, and the rate of exploration should increase by 5 per cent annually. Pointing out that focus should be on increasing domestic mining, Mr Parikh said that the country mines only 500 million tonnes (mt) annually, which needs to go up to anywhere between 1.7 and 2 billion tonnes in the next 25 years. Coal production during the current financial year is expected to be 427 mt against a demand of 473 mt, according to official projections. Similarly, coal demand is projected to grow to 1,267 mt by 2025 against an estimated supply of 1,134 mt.
COAL CONFERENCE
The Institution of Engineers (India) announced on Tuesday that it would organise a three-day international coal Congress between December 3 and 5 in association with the Ministries of Coal, Power, Steel, Petroleum, Mines, and science and technology, and the Planning Commission. The conference is expected to have more than 150 international participants and will be participated by 500 mining experts.
