But since January 2006, despite unprecedented 35-40 per cent growth in truck sales, the truck rentals have ruled firm.

New Delhi , Nov. 30

With the reduction in diesel prices, truck rentals should come down by 2.5-3 per cent at least on trunk routes, says a research body.

Due to the weighted impact of the reduction in diesel price by Re 1 per litre, the truck rentals should come down by a minimum of 2.5-3 per cent on trunk routes, said the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT) in a statement.

However, it also pointed out that during the last five years, the truck rentals have generally dropped by 3-4 per cent in December, due to slackness in cargo offering to truckers after the festival season.

However, since January 2006, despite unprecedented 35-40 per cent growth in truck sales, the truck rentals have ruled firm on the back of double digit growth in manufacturing sector, massive expansion in construction and infrastructure projects and a robust 20-25 per cent growth in import-export trade.

In Maharashtra, the State Government has announced a cut in sales tax on diesel with effect from December 1 resulting in Rs 2.43 per litre reduction in diesel price.

Thus, coupled with Re 1 per litre reduction in diesel price by oil companies and reduction in sales tax, the truck rental in Maharashtra, particularly on intra-State routes should drop, at least, by 10-12 per cent in coming days, it stated.
