Cars Corporate - New Projects States - West Bengal
Our Bureau
Kolkata , Nov. 30 The West Bengal Government has banned gatherings, meetings and processions at Singur, where the Tatas will be setting up their small car project. The State administration has imposed Section 144 CrPC, which effectively bars the holding of any meeting or procession in the area. Today, the administration stopped the Trinamool Congress Chief and Member of Parliament, Ms Mamata Banerjee, who was on her way to Singur to take part in a protest march against the acquisition of farmland for the Tata car project. She was sent back to the city despite her insistence that she be allowed to take part in the march along with leaders of other political parties, including the Congress.
Bandh call today
After returning to the city, Ms Banerjee entered the State Assembly and said the police action was "illegal" and her democratic right to movement had been thwarted. The Trinamool Congress has called for a 12-hour State-wide bandh on Friday to protest against the forcible acquisition of farmland by the State Government for the project, police atrocities on party supporters and the curbing of democratic rights of Opposition parties by the ruling Left Front. The bandh call has been opposed by the State Government, which has said that all steps would be taken to ensure normality in the State. Buses and trams will run normally across the State, said Mr Subhas Chakraborty, West Bengal's Transport Minister. Speaking to presspersons at the Writers' Buildings, Mr Chakraborty said the administration, including the police, were asked to ensure that the average citizens carry on with were not thwarted in going about their normal activity.
