Global Visa cardholders spent Rs 6,000 cr

`Visitors from Europe were biggest spenders in 12 months'

New Delhi , Nov. 30

International Visa cardholders spent Rs 6,000 crore here between July last year and June this year, with cardholders from the European Union emerging the biggest spenders.

A research report prepared by Visa International showed that the total international spend on Visa cards here by Europeans was pegged at more than Rs 2,400 crore.

The top-three Visa spending countries of origin were the United States ($421 million or 31 per cent of total tourist spend), the UK ($268 million or 20 per cent of total tourist spend) and France ($69 million or five per cent of total tourist spend).

The study indicated that cardholders from Nepal showed the most impressive spend growth at 126 per cent, followed by mainland China (94 per cent) and South Korea (48 per cent).

Further, the study showed that the average international Visa transactions (excluding cash withdrawals) was Rs 8,100 during the period under review. Visitors from Russia, Japan and Switzerland spent the most per transaction with an average size of Rs 14,000, Rs 13,000 and Rs 12,000 respectively.

The data showed that the total number of Visa transactions by visitors here increased by 21 per cent compared to the previous year, with 68 per cent of the transactions registered in three categories — general retail and trade outlets (more than Rs 1,900 crore), accommodation (more than Rs 1,600 crore) and transport (more than Rs 520 crore).

Delhi was the number one spot for foreign travel with Rs 1,200 crore recorded on visitors Visa card followed by Mumbai (more than Rs 1,100 crore) and Bangalore (more than Rs 560 crore).
