TN proposes mini-port at Cheyyur

Our Bureau

Chennai , Dec. 5

The Tamil Nadu Government is considering setting up a mini-port near Cheyyur (near Chingleput) to facilitate establishment of a 2,000 MW coal-based power plant by NTPC.

Responding to a question in the Assembly today, Electricity Minister Mr Arcot Veerasamy said that NTPC has agreed to start work on the project from April 2007 if the State Government facilitates the project and the clearances.

At a meeting of NTPC Chairman Mr T. Sankaralingam with officials of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) and the Government, NTPC sought coal-handling facilities close to the power plant.

The distance from Chennai or Cuddalore, which are the existing options, would be too great.

The TNEB is discussing with the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board the feasibility of setting up such a facility near Cheyyur, he said.

Tamil Nadu would get half the power generated from the Rs 8,000-crore project.

Usually, the State in which an NTPC plant is located gets only a third of the power generated.
