New Delhi , Dec. 5 Having sold of its mobile radio equipment division to Alcatel-Lucent, Canadian major Nortel is now betting big on Wi-Max technology and will conduct the first trials in India by January 2007. Nortel has already entered into an agreement with an operator to conduct the trials and is expecting commercial launch by mid 2007 ahead of third generation (3G) services deployment by cellular operators. Wi-Max is a wireless broadband technology that will enable users to get high-speed data services on computers and mobile handsets. Consumers will be able to get access to services like movies, video on demand apart from applications like distance education, e-medicine for the rural areas. Globally, Wi-Max is being seen as a disruptive technology and number of companies such as Intel is investing in developing the usability of the technology. Nortel is also setting up a new customer network management centre in Gurgaon near Delhi. This is its third global centre after US and UK. The move is aimed at tapping the growing BPO and small and medium enterprise segments in the country. The network management centre will cater to Nortel's Asia Pacific operation. Nortel had earlier announced a 5-year deal with Bharti Airtel for using hosted contact centre services and an interactive voice response (IVR) solution from Nortel. The Canadian firm is now looking to ink more such deals in the Indian space. "There's tremendous opportunity for cost savings and improved efficiency and performance through remote operation and management of networks and applications. With our extensive Global Services portfolio and the opening of our new Asia Network Management Centre, we now have the global scale to help our customers capitalise on this opportunity virtually anywhere in the world," said Mr Rajat Tandon, Head, Managed Services, Nortel India. Mr Tandon refused to give details of the investments or the number of people working at the centre. Nortel's global services include a full range of integrated services for design, deployment, management and maintenance of end-to-end multi-vendor network solutions, including seamless migration to next generation technologies.
