Mustard stocks with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (Nafed) amounted to 16.61 lakh tonnes (lt) valued at Rs 3,174.65 crore as on November 28.

This included 15.84 lt (Rs 3,033.36 crore) of seed procured during the 2006 rabi season and 0.77 lt (Rs 141.29 crore) purchased in 2005 rabi, the Union Minister of State for Agriculture, Mr Kanti Lal Bhuria, told the Lok Sabha on Monday.

"Nafed has been advised to arrange disposal of 4-5 lt of mustard seed every month at market rate for minimising inventories," he added. The country produced 75.93 lt of rapessed-mustard in 2004-05 and 78.87 lt in 2005-06, of which Nafed procured 20.93 lt and 22.05 lt, respectively.
