Spices export rises in value, slips in volume

G. K. Nair

Kochi , Dec. 6

Exports of spices continued to show an upward trend in terms of value, while in volume the declining trend continued.

During April-October, total shipments stood at 1,95,432 tonnes valued at Rs 1,725.15 crore compared with 1,99,477 tonnes worth Rs 1,406.19 crore in the same period a year ago.

Thus, in terms of value the exports increased by Rs 318.96 crore, while in terms of volume it fell by 4,045 tonne.

In forex terms, exports increased $55 million to $376 million against $321 million last year.

The increase in the unit value of most of the items is due to short supply from other producing countries, official sources told Business Line.

Besides, the decline in production of certain spices such as cumin, ginger, pepper, other spices has pushed up the shipments of these items during the current fiscal.

Besides, exports of value-added products such as curry powder/paste, mint products and spice oils and oleoresins increased by Rs 74.05 crore to Rs 813.18 crore from Rs 739.13 crore in Apr - Oct 2005. Though the shipments of mint products showed decline in terms of quantity by around 300 tonne the high unit value has helped it in high value realisation. The unit value of this product went up to Rs 631.09 a kg this year from Rs 520.96 a kg last year. Curry powder/paste enjoyed an increase in unit value while spice oils and oleoresins experienced a marginal decline, they said.

Sharp fall in some of the items such as chilli, coriander has led to the drop in total quantity exported.

For the first time since 2002-03, shipments of pepper showed an upward trend. Exports increased to 13,825 tonnes, valued at Rs 128.78 crore, against 8,971 tonnes, valued at Rs 76.32 crore, last year. The unit value moved up from Rs 85.08 a kg to Rs 93.15 a kg. Tight pepper supply position in the world market coupled with the competitive price due to the export subsidy available to exporters paved the way for the increase, they claimed.
