Tea Tea volumes continue to be low at Coonoor P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Dec. 6 Volume continues to be low at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) to be held this week. For the 49th sale to take place here on Thursday and Friday, a volume of 12.69 lakh kg has been catalogued. Though this is marginally higher than the 12.38 lakh kg offered last week, the volume is still six-week low barring last week. "The volume has fallen because of incessant rains in the last two months with inadequate sunshine. In some pockets, the incidence of blister blight has increased. Now, deeply chill dews are seen spread over the bushes in many places and we are heading for some frost in low-lying areas. By now, we reckon that we have lost some 20 per cent of the crop in the small growers fields compared to last year," Mr T. Rangaiah, President of the Nilgiris Small Tea Growers' Association, told Business Line.
More than last year
The volume, however, is more than the offer in the corresponding sale of last year. That time, the offer totalled only 8.4 lakh kg. Of the 12.69 lakh kg catalogued now, as much as 9.02 lakh kg belong to leaf grades and 3.67 lakh kg, dust grades.
