New National Waterways planned

Two Bills were recently placed in Parliament to declare two old canal/river systems as National Waterway Number 4 and Number 5. The proposed NW 4 will be 1,095-km Kakinada-Puducherry route linking two major rivers — the Godavari and the Krishna — and several canals — Kakinada Canal, Eluru Canal, Commamur Canal, Buckingham Canal and Kaluvely tank. NW 5 will be a 623-km route from West Bengal's Geonkhali to Orissa's Paradip on one end and Talcher on the other, integrating the Hijli Tidal Canal, the East Coast Canal, and the Matai, Brahmani and Mahanadi rivers.

The total cost of developing these canal systems and the river routes is estimated at over Rs 2,000 crore — Rs 1526 crore for NW 5 and Rs 542 crore for NW 4 — and the target year for completion of the projects is 2016-17. The Government also has before it a proposal to declare the 140-km Karimganj-Lakhimpur route on the Barak river in Assam as the NW 6 and the cost of development is estimated at Rs 46 crore.
