Railways Shunted out
Four-wheeled tank wagons are on their way out.
The Railways has decided to phase out, perhaps rightly so, the old four-wheeler tank wagons and introduce in their place new generation eight-wheeler BTPN tank wagons with higher average payload. But the process of phasing out is yet to pick up the expected pace, for several reasons. Several depots of the oil companies cannot handle the new generation tank wagons. Next, the Railways own diesel locos at many places depend more on supply by road than by the old four-wheeler tank wagons. Perhaps, more important, there are certain commodities such as caustic soda, caustic lime and vegetable oil, which are still transported in the old four-wheeler tank wagons. Recently a zonal railway was asked to collect old four-wheeler tank wagons spread over wide areas and form a full rake to be placed at a state-owned refinery for immediate loading as the diesel stocks at several places dropped to critical levels.
