Tea Improved demand for CTC teas in northern centres Our Bureau
Kolkata , Dec. 17 The three north Indian tea auction centres at Guwahati, Kolkata and Siliguri reported improved demand for all CTC teas during the period from December 11 to 15. This was because the tea production in most of the tea growing regions of North East India was coming to early end, about a fortnight earlier than usual, largely due to climatic condition, according to tea auction sources. Good quality teas improved in value while the prices of medium varieties were firm. The plain and fibrous sorts were sold at levels comparable to the previous week. The demand was strong from all sections in the domestic market. The trend is expected to continue for the remaining sales of the season, the sources observe. The Darjeeling teas met with good demand and teas with seasonal character witnessed a rise in prices. The demand was largely forthcoming from major domestic packeteers and local Bengal buyers. The orthodox teas also met with good demand with clean well-made whole leaf grades attracting firm rates. The major players during the week continued to be the buyers for West Asia and the CIS countries. The plainer sorts are likely to meet with improved demand, as buyers will need to hold sufficient stocks till April next, the sources add.
