Chennai likely base for $10-m project

New Delhi , Dec. 27

In order to broadbase its business, Taiwanese IT hardware products company Asustek Computers plans to initially invest between $7.5 million and $10 million in a manufacturing facility here. Since the Indian market is price-driven, the company would scale up its investments depending upon its market presence, said Mr Andrew Tsui, Chairman and Managing Director, Asus, India Operations.

The company, according to industry sources, is in the final stages of deciding on its manufacturing base in the country.

Mr Tsui said Chennai was likely to be the preferred destination. Commenting on the reason for taking such a long time to decide its manufacturing base, he said infrastructure and quality labour were the main factors it was considering.

Also another decisive factor was broadband connectivity, which mirrored PC penetration in the country.

The company would be launching PCs with features addressing needs of the education and government sector in the next fiscal.

It was looking to manufacture these PCs in the country for the domestic market.

While in the LCD monitor market, Asus is a small player, it has about 60 per cent market share in the domestic motherboard market. It is also in talks with telecom companies for sale of its networking equipment for broadband and with operators for rolling out Wimax on a national scale in the next fiscal.

Asus had recently announced the setting up of its Mumbai office.

Currently, it has a presence in top 20 cities.
