Bangalore , Dec. 31

BSNL, Karnataka Telecom Circle expects to doubles its subscriber base for its mobile telephony to three million by the next financial year.

It hopes to achieve this target by enhancing infrastructure and improving support services, said a senior official.

Though with its larger network coverage, particularly in the rural areas, BSNL has garnered 1.5 million subscribers.

Answering questions at a press conference here on the occasion of the announcement of a one-stop broadband-based services, including Web hosting and server co-location, Mr T.S. Kuppuswamy, Chief General Manager, Karnataka Telecom Circle, ruled out reports of migration of its subscribers to service providers in private sector due to poor coverage and congestion problems.

Though admitting that some minor incidence of coverage problems existed with a small number of subscribers, Mr Kuppuswamy said BSNL would be strengthening its transmission facilities by doubling the network facilities by installing an additional 1,500 cell sites in 1,000 more locations in the State to improve the services.

Pre-paid base

This would also help the company increase its subscriber base to three million by next year, he added.

BSNL has a strong pre-paid customer base of 85 per cent of its current subscriber strength of 1.5 million, he said.

Mr Kuppuswamy said BSNL's Karnataka Circle had a broadband subscriber base of 1.18 lakh against a capacity of 1.38 lakh.

Of the total live connections, Bangalore has the dominance of 60 per cent. Plans were on to double the capacity to 3.3 lakh by 2007, he added.
