Printing electoral rolls

Mumbai , Jan. 1

Vakrangee Software Ltd (VSL), engaged in election documentation and e-governance, plans to import seven high-speed variable digital data systems used for printing electoral rolls from the US-based Kodak for Rs 100 crore by 2007 end. Company officials aver that the Kodak Versamark VT3000 printing system — with a printing speed of 2,180 impressions per minute — will be Asia's first installation.

The company claims that with these systems, it will be able to reduce the time taken for completing the election process in India. "At present, the election process from the date of announcement to the actual polling date takes about 60 days, with the preparation of electoral rolls through the conventional printing method taking the maximum time. Our new printing facility will cut down this time by almost 50 per cent, besides ensuring timely delivery of such stationeries," Mr Dinesh Nandwana, chairman and managing director of the company said.

The digital data systems will be deployed at various metros for processing election related stationery. VSL has imported one system on pilot basis at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore in Mumbai. "The same will be used in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa for the forthcoming by-election", said Mr Nandwana. The company plans to have seven to eight such variable digital data system by the end of 2007. "We will be placing these systems in other metro's including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kokata etc," Mr Nandwana added. The company is also in the process of designing Electronic Election Machines (EEM), enabling voters to use their fingerprints or PIN code for identification.
