NTPC Simhadri contract workers go on strike

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Jan. 2

Nearly a thousand contract workers in the NTPC Simhadri thermal power station here went on strike from Tuesday morning, in protest against what they described as the obdurate attitude of the management.

Though power generation may not be immediately affected in the two units (500 MW each) of the thermal station, the impact of the strike may be felt in a day or two, as coal unloading and handling may be hit.

On Monday, one of the units in the thermal power station tripped, causing disruption in power generation. The problem in the boiler tubes was rectified and power generation resumed by Tuesday morning. But the strike by contract workers poses a fresh problem to the management. According to Mr N. Ramachandra Rao, General Secretary, NTPC Simhadri Thermal Power Contract Workers' Union Congress, affiliated to the INTUC, the workers have been urging the NTPC Simhadri management and the contractors to pay them the dust allowance of Rs 600 a month, on a par with NTPC Ramagundam, and to fix minimum wages for different categories of workers.
