Farm crisis

This is with reference to "Revitalising the farm sector" (Business Line, January 2).The statement: "Agriculture is perhaps next only in importance to Defence," is the most significant input to the policy debate on agriculture in recent times. In the credit and infrastructure funding areas for agriculture one needs to further harness the potential of the apex institution for the sector — the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard). The sooner the government strengthens Nabard's resource base and frees it from the RBI, the better it would be for the sector as a whole.
