Low volumes on offer at Coonoor tea auctions

P.S. Sundar

First sale of the year begins today with 11.30 lakh kg on offer

Coonoor , Jan. 3

The auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) for the year 2007 open on Thursday with a volume of 11.30 lakh kg on offer. The sale will be held on Friday also. The auctions are resuming after a fortnight holiday for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The volume continues to be low as even after a fortnight, only 60,000 kg have come extra.

"The arrivals will continue to be low in the next few weeks as several thousand hectares of tea fields have been affected by frost. Night temperature continues to be minus three degrees Celsius in many pockets of the Nilgiris district. Most frost bitten tea bushes will not come for harvest in the next couple of months," an auctioneer told Business Line.

The volume, however, is some 3.8 lakh kg more than the first sale of last year.

Leaf grades

Of the 11.3-lakh kg on offer now, as much as 8.28 lakh kg belong to the leaf grades and only 3.02 lakh kg, dust grades. Again, as much as 10.36 lakh kg belong to the CTC variety and the balance 0.94 lakh kg, orthodox variety.

The proportion of orthodox variety continues to be low among both the leaf and dust grades. Among the leaf grades, only 0.51 lakh kg belong to the orthodox variety.
