A WORKER SPRAYING pesticide in a paddy field near Thrissur, Kerala. Though the country has attained enviable agricultural growth in recent years, over-dependence on chemical pesticides has become untenable in view of the health hazards and environmental pollution leading to elimination of several non-target beneficial fauna. Excessive doses of synthetic agro-chemicals, particularly nitrogenous fertilisers and synthetic pesticides, have upset the natural balance.
