Tea manufacturers seek panel on quality upgradation

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Jan. 4

The Nilgiris Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers' Association, representing private factories in the small-scale sector, has appealed to the Tea Board Chairman to constitute an advisory committee on quality upgradation.

"Although the Nilgiris has the largest number of small growers, numbering more than 65,000 and factories manufacturing all types of teas, we do not have an advisory committee to promote the quality at the filed and factory level. Presently, the approach of the Tea Board has been to inspect, raid, threaten and accord adverse publicity to the factories and small growers in the name of bringing in quality production," Mr R.B. Gopalakrishnan, Secretary, said in his communication to the Chairman.

He said the positive approach would be to form an advisory committee comprising officials of the board, UPASI, Indco factories, representative of the Bought Leaf Factories Association and small growers' association.
