HC to hear Book Fair case next week

Our Legal Correspondent

Kolkata , Jan. 5

A Division Bench of Calcutta High Court comprising Mr V.S. Sirpurkar, Chief Justice, and Mr Justice Arun Kumar Mitra today fixed the hearing on the holding of the Book Fair at the Maidan for next Wednesday.

Today, the Counsel of the Publishers and Book Sellers' Guild submitted that the ensuing book fair at Maidan in Kolkata was dependent on the permission of Calcutta High Court as the Department of Defence had no objection subject to the permission of the High Court.

Earlier in 2006, the Ministry of Defence had given conditional permission to hold the book fair on the Maidan for the last time. The Defence Department has now intimated that it has no objection to granting permission if the High Court gave its consent. The Court expressed surprise at this because the earlier order of the Court relied on the submission of the Defence Department.

The organisers have assured that the book fair area would be kept free from pollution and that the entire site would be cleaned up within 72 hours after the conclusion of the fair.
