Exports & Imports Sensitive items import up 8% in Apr-Nov Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 5 Imports of "sensitive items" such as edible oil, cotton and silk, foodgrain products of small-scale units, rubber, marble and granite, alcoholic beverages, spices, milk and milk products and automobiles have increased during the first eight months of the current fiscal, pushing the overall sensitive import growth items to eight per cent. Total imports of sensitive items for April-November 2006 have been Rs 13,075 crore as compared to Rs 12,126 crore in the corresponding period last year. Import of sensitive items constitutes 3.3 per cent and 2.5 per cent of the gross imports during last year and current year respectively.
Edible oil segment
An official release said in the edible oil segment, the import has increased from Rs 6,497 crore last year (Rs 6,926 crore). A notable feature of edible oil import is that import crude oil has gone up by 14.8 per cent and that of refined oil has declined by 49.6 per cent. The growth in edible oil import is mainly due to significant increase in import of crude palm oil and its fractions, which have gone up by 36 per cent. Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, Argentina, Australia, the US, China, Malaysia, Russia, Japan, Sri Lanka, Cote D' Ivory, Germany and Ghana have gone up while those from Brazil, Guinea Bissau, Egypt, and Benin have shown a decrease.
