The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, has promised all legally possible measures to ensure that the film industry in the State survives the menace of pirated CDs.
Addressing a function held here on Monday to honour nonagenarian actor Aranmula Ponnamma with the J. C. Daniel Award for life-time achievement, the Chief Minister gave out sufficient hints that the ongoing anti-piracy drive will continue across the State.
`WRONG SIGNALS'
Any soft-pedalling at this juncture would only send out wrong signals to the pirates, he said. Referring to complaints that even innocent shop owners may have been targeted as part of the drive, Mr Achuthanandan said that the anti-piracy personnel would be asked to get their basics right before mounting a raid.
Thousands of people who make a living out of films and ancillary industries, including theatres, have been hit by the scourge of pirated CDs.
GOOD TRENDS
The emerging trends are encouraging, he added. There have been spirited attempts in recent times to revive good cinema. This needs to be sustained, for which the Government would provide all help.
Mr M. A. Baby, the Minister for Education and Culture; Mr Adoor Gopalakri- shnan, noted film director; Mr O. N. V. Kurup, litterateur; Mr Madhu, veteran actor; Mr K.R. Mohan, Chairman, and Mr Sreekumar, Secretary, Kerala Chalachitra Academy; and Ms Sarada Muraleedharan, Secretary, Culture, attended the function.
