Significant growth in tea exports to Pak

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Jan. 8

Tea exports to Pakistan have shown a significant growth, with total shipments estimated to cross 15 million kg (mkg) in 2006.

The total exports in the January-September 2006 period stood at 11.13 mkg worth Rs 69.73 crore against 7.19 mkg worth Rs 31.98 crore in the corresponding previous period.

Most of the shipments are from South India as Pakistani buyers are exposed to different types of teas at a competitive price, industry sources said.

As a result, exports from South India went up substantially.

Shipments during the January-October period went up to 90.9 mkg (77.6 mkg), while exports from the North dropped to 59.9 mkg (73.6 mkg).

Promotional activities such as the Golden Tea Leaf awards contributed to the upward swing in southern tea exports, they said.

The country shipped out 150.8 mkg in January-October 2006 against 151.2 mkg in the same period in 2005.

The total output in the period rose by 22.9 mkg to 820.4 mkg (797.5 mkg).

There was an increase of 27.5 mkg in North India, taking the total production to 634.9 mkg, while in the South, it dropped by 4.6 mkg to 185.5 mkg. Meanwhile, Kenyan tea output has improved in recent months, reducing the deficit in output by 22.5 mkg by November-end.

The total global production, however, is estimated to be less by 10.3 mkg during this period. In fact, the shortfall in world tea output in general and Kenya in particular has benefited only that country, as it has got better price while others have not gained much, the sources said.

On the other hand, imports of tea by India in January-September went up to 16.79 mkg worth Rs 85.44 crore from 12.55 mkg worth Rs 72.67 crore earlier.
