Move will enable running of co's pellet plant, port facilities, captive power plants in Mangalore

Mangalore , Jan. 8

The Kudremukh Shram Shakthi Sanghatan (a trade union affiliated to Hind Mazdoor Sabha) has urged the Karnataka Government to allot 1,573 hectares of mining area of Ramana Durga deposits at Bellary to Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd (KIOCL).

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr S. Venkataraya, General Secretary of the sanghatan, said KIOCL had applied for mine allotment at Ramana Durga on March 9, 2000. While the application was pending, the Karnataka Government issued a notification calling for applications for grant of mining leases in the notified areas on March 15, 2003. Following this, the sanghatan filed a writ petition challenging the notification dated March 15, 2003.

"In an order dated December 19, 2006, the Karnataka High Court has directed the State Government to consider the application filed by KIOCL in accordance with law," he said.

The grant of mining lease at Ramana Durga will make the company run its pellet plant, port facilities and captive power plants in Mangalore. He said these facilities were constructed entirely based on the supply of iron ore concentrate from Kudremukh mine. The company stopped mining operations at Kudremukh in December 2005 following the Supreme Court order in this regard.

The sanghatan is submitting memoranda to the President of India, the Governor of Karnataka, the Prime Minister, the Karnataka Chief Minister, the Union Ministries of Steel, Environment and Forests, and Mines, praying for the immediate implementation of the Karnataka High Court order by allotting 1,573 hectares of mining area to of Ramana Durga deposit at Bellary to KIOCL.
