Visakhapatnam , Jan. 8

The State Government will appoint a consultant for giving suitable suggestions for the development of Visakhapatnam city, according to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

He was speaking here on Monday after laying the foundation stone for the Rs 120-crore Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences in the old dairy farm area.

He said the growth of Vizag in the next five years would far surpass what had been achieved during the past six decades and "therefore we are appointing a consultant to give it a proper direction."

TIME FRAME

Describing the taking up of the super specialty hospital as a landmark step, he said it would be developed on a 100-acre site, with 1,100 beds. Tenders would be finalised in two months and the hospital would be ready by mid-2008.

"It will be like the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad. People from the coastal districts will be greatly benefited," he said.

Of the project cost, Rs 80 crore would be spent on the building and the rest (Rs 40 crore) on equipment, he added.

Mr N. Janardhana Reddy, MP from Visakhapatnam, also spoke.
