Chamber for upgrading Madurai airport

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Jan. 12

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, for an early upgradation of Madurai Airport as an international airport in addition to providing certain important aviation facilities.

In a memorandum submitted to the Minister in New Delhi on Thursday, the team of office-bearers of the Chamber led by its President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, and accompanied by Mr N.S.V. Chitthan, Member of Parliament, has pointed out that the absence of international air connectivity has been severely impeding the flow of international tourists to Madurai, despite it being a renowned tourist centre and an emerging healthcare centre with a number of prominent hospitals. It is also retarding the industrial development of the region.

The need is emphasised with the acceleration of a number of recent industrial initiatives such as Nangunery Special Economic Zone, Koodangulam Atomic Power Plant, Sethusamudram Ship Canal project and so on, that carry the potential for increased passenger traffic to and from foreign destinations.
