TN orders verification of list of urban BPL families

Our Bureau

A detailed survey of BPL families living in urban local bodies was conducted in 2003

Coimbatore , Jan. 17

The Tamil Nadu Government has ordered verification of below poverty line (BPL) list in the urban local bodies (ULBs) in the State for making inclusions/deletions/ corrections in the list.

The decision comes in the wake of representations made regarding the correctness of the list as some of the families were left out of the BPL list and following suggestions made by the people's representatives during the district review meetings conducted by the Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration.

In his order, Mr K. Deenabandu, Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply (Maj) Department, said the Commissioner of Municipal Administration (CMA) had stated that a detailed survey of BPL families living in ULBs was conducted in 2003 and that there have been representations regarding the correctness of the list as some families were left out.

The CMA had also brought to the notice of the Government that the Erode District Collector had made a suggestion to verify the BPL list so as to make inclusions/deletions/alterations etc. The public representatives also had made certain suggestions in this regard. The CMA felt that there was an urgent necessity to verify the present BPL list to identify the families to be included/ excluded from the list and wanted the Government to order verification.

Accepting the CMA's recommendations, the Government has called for the verification of the BPL lists in all ULBs in the State. It has asked for the publication of the list on notice boards of concerned municipal/town panchayat office, ward office for verification by the elected representatives/public for at least 15 days.

Representations received, if any, from the public or elected representatives should be verified with the survey formats within 15 days and the final BPL list should be published and then placed before the respective councils. Inclusion and exclusion of BPL families which have shifted from/to other local bodies should be done after due verification.

The APL families found in BPL list should be deleted immediately. He said the survey formats of left-out cases should be verified critically by the municipal commissioners/executive officers of ULBs.

Mr Deenabandu said the non-economic parameters prescribed in the guidelines for identification of BPL families by the Central Government should also be applied. He asked all ULBs to complete the verification and deletion/inclusion work within the stipulated period and the final survey list should be furnished to the CMA/Director of Town Panchayats not later than February 15.
