Army nod for book fair venue challenged

Our Legal Correspondent

Kolkata , Jan.19

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed by an advocate of the Calcutta High Court challenging the decision to grant permission to the Booksellers and Publishers' Guild to hold Book Fair 2007 at the Maidan.

In the petition, it has been alleged that in 2006, the Army had granted conditional permission for holding the Book Fair, on the assurance that 2006 would be the last such fair at the Maidan venue.

It is further submitted in the petition that without modifying or vacating the order of 2006, the Army has granted permission to the Guild, which is arbitrary and discriminative.
