Bangalore Jan. 21 SAP Research plans to set up an RFID competency centre in the country, in association with its partners. In line with its strategy of keeping its flagship ERP (enterprise resource planning) software suites up-to-date with current and new technologies, the German firm invests in fundamental research and will have a "fairly huge focus on RFID," according to Mr Rajagopal Balakrishnan, Regional Director, South India and Sri Lanka, SAP India.

Enterprise Applications

Radio frequency identification (RFID) works by tagging objects with a chip containing relevant data (such as price). The chip transmits the information on it wirelessly to a reader. This method is an alternative to bar codes, but whereas the scanner needs to be oriented towards the code, RFID tags can be read from a distance of a hundred feet. Some day, you may just be able to find that key that you keep misplacing, just by picking up a reader and pointing it around a room, almost a "google" in reality.

SAP Labs

The RFID competency centre will probably be set up at SAP Labs facility in the city in the next few months, said Mr Balakrishnan. The company has been integrating RFID in many of their projects, including one in the education sector and another for emergency evacuations in a building.

India is emerging as a hotbed for RFID activities and with local manufacturing for inlay, tags, readers, and antenna being initiated, the segment is expected grow faster than expected.
